How are dental implants inserted?

Understanding Patient Needs
The first step in the insertion of dental implants involves a detailed consultation to understand the patient’s dental needs and desired outcomes. During this phase, dentists evaluate the patient’s oral health, including bone density and the condition of remaining teeth, to determine the feasibility of implants.
Tailored Treatment Planning
A tailored treatment plan is developed based on the initial assessment. This plan outlines the steps required for implant insertion, including any preparatory procedures to ensure a sturdy foundation for the implants.
Preparatory Procedures
For patients with insufficient jawbone structure, a bone graft may be necessary to establish a solid base for the implant. This procedure involves transplanting bone material to the target area, followed by a healing period before implant insertion can proceed.
Surgical Placement
The actual insertion of dental implants is a surgical process performed under local anaesthesia. A small incision is made in the gum to expose the bone, and a specialised drill is used to create a space for the implant. The titanium implant, resembling a screw, is then carefully inserted into the jawbone.
Osseointegration
Following the placement, a critical phase known as osseointegration begins. During this period, the jawbone naturally fuses with the titanium implant, creating a secure and permanent anchor. This process can take several months, during which the patient may receive a temporary restoration.
Attaching the Abutment and Crown
Once osseointegration has successfully occurred, the subsequent step involves the placement of an abutment onto the implant. This element acts as a connector for the final restoration, whether it’s a crown, bridge, or denture. Individually crafted to match the shade and contour of the patient’s natural teeth, the restoration is then attached to the abutment, completing the implantation journey.
Post-Procedure Care and Follow-up
After the insertion of dental implants, patients are provided with detailed care instructions to promote healing and maintain oral hygiene. Follow-up appointments are essential to monitor the implant, adjust the restoration if necessary, and ensure the health of surrounding tissues.
